JOB OBJECTIVES

  • Evaluate financial data for banks and the relevant sector, and study economic trends and developments in their stock market.
  • Build and maintain valuation models for companies based on information gathered and analysis performed.
  • Calculate company valuations and recommend investment ideas to portfolio managers

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct general research into Banks by sourcing information from business investments magazines, companies and the internet in order to understand the factors which influence companies’ prospects. This assists in evaluating companies in terms of understanding the products and factors influencing the companies’ valuation. Reads industry journals, magazines, newspapers and online sources to follow targeted companies and economic trends both locally and internationally.
  • Obtain, read and analyze research from research houses for possible research and investment ideas.
  • Review and interpret balance sheets, cash flow statements, and income statements. Calculates financial ratios.
  • Provide and maintain required information for the ranking table based on analysis and valuation models built.
  • Make, buy, sell or hold suggestions.
  • Participate in research, asset allocation and morning meetings, and share information regarding company and industry areas of coverage.
  • Perform and co-ordinate multiple, concurrent research projects and produce outputs for various stakeholders when required.
  • Assist when appropriate in sales and marketing, through contributions from an analyst perspective.
  • Build effective but objective relationships with company management teams.
  • On an ad-hoc basis, support ECM via investor educational research & input into idea generation corporate-finance requirements.
  • Continuously evaluate the external environment and assess the impact on the area’s activities. Where required,
  • discuss any changes which will result in an overall strategic impact with the Head of Research.
  • Source information from business / investments magazines and the internet in order to develop understanding of key drivers.
  • Conduct financial feasibility analysis and equity valuations
  • Establish outperform, neutral and underperform recommendations for covered stocks and communicate investment ideas and market updates to the internal institutional sales and trading teams.
  • Prepare reports on subjects such as rate of return, investment performance, investment opportunities/risks, overview of the market.
  • Collect relevant information and research various competitor trends both internationally and locally.
  • Assess corporate strategy and implementation by interviewing management teams, competitors, customers and suppliers.
  • Evaluate complex profit plans, strategic moves, operating records and financial statements.
  • Produce a full range of written products including quarterly outlooks, annual topical reviews and company reports
  • Co-ordinate multiple, concurrent research projects and produce reports for various stakeholders when required regarding varied projects.
  • Produce research with minimum supervision.
  • Articulate the major issues surrounding areas of work and the strategy for addressing them.
  • Recognized as an expert in their discipline.
  • Establish and manage relationships with both internal and external sources of information/industry role players
  • and clients in order to source relevant information.
  • Build and maintain relationships with both internal and external role players e.g., Research Forums conferences.
  • Build relationships with colleagues to share information/ideas.
  • Maintain a high level of focus on client relations, proactively seeking to improve the relationship.
  • Identify and build on revenue or cost-saving opportunities.
  • Represent house views on Banks sector trends and developments in the media.
  • Prioritize the output of the team/self, ensuring delivery within deadlines.

 

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 5 years previous experience in research, financial analysis and interpretation

 

EDUCATION

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (Second Class Upper Division)
  • CFA, ACCA or MBA qualification is an added advantage

 

KEY COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the key drivers in their sector.
  • Financial analysis, report writing, working knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Bloomberg
